Putting your thoughts down on paper is not all that it takes to be a successful writer. No matter if your plan is to publish your articles in a magazine, newspaper or on the Internet, there are a few tips that you should know to help you get started in the publication industry.
Do not be afraid to use contractions in your writing, unless you are writing a strict academic piece. People speak in contractions so it is more natural for them to read, “I can’t” instead of “I cannot”.
Another thing that you will need to learn if you plan to be a successful writer is the proper use of homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same, but are spelled different and have different meanings such as “it’s” and “its” or “to” and “two”. The best way is to study the use of such words and memorize which spelling goes with which meaning in order to keep you writing correct and easy to read.
